Experts: Gaza needs urgent environmental survey to avert disaster

Experts stress the urgent need for an environmental survey in Gaza to address severe pollution and health issues.

In Gaza, the dire living conditions have led to a public health crisis, particularly noted by displaced individual Mohamed Al-Hisi, who is experiencing unsanitary conditions caused by sewage leakage. The situation has given rise to an alarming increase in insects and rodents, while children in the area suffer from various diseases due to the compromised environment. Reports indicate that a lack of clean drinking water is a persistent issue, further exacerbating the deteriorating situation for the population.

The Director-General of the Water and Environmental Quality Authority in Gaza, Mazen Al-Banna, has voiced grave concerns regarding the widespread damage to the water and environmental sectors due to ongoing conflict. He estimates that between 80% to 90% of essential facilities, including water wells, wastewater systems, and treatment plants, have been severely affected. This destruction has impeded efforts to maintain and restore vital infrastructure, leading to even worse ramifications for the health and safety of Gaza’s residents.

The ongoing blockade makes it increasingly challenging to import necessary materials and equipment for the maintenance and rehabilitation of water systems, raising alarm about the long-term implications for public health in Gaza. Without prompt action, the community faces a looming public health disaster, necessitating immediate intervention from local and international bodies to facilitate urgent environmental assessments and restore access to clean water and sanitation services.
