Kajaani tests robot that can perform snow removal, lawn mowing, and leaf blowing as the first municipality
Kajaani is the first municipality in Finland to test a mobile robot capable of handling snow removal, lawn mowing, and leaf blowing, operated remotely via a smartphone or game controller.
In Kajaani, Finland, the city has begun testing a robot capable of performing various outdoor maintenance tasks such as snow removal, lawn mowing, and leaf blowing. This innovative robot, affectionately named 'Jarmo' by employees, is currently operated using a smartphone or game controller while it is being developed for independent operation in the future. City engineer Matti Nousiainen expressed confidence that the robot's navigation capabilities and area mapping will allow it to manage its tasks autonomously, returning to its charging station as needed.
Nousiainen reassured employees that there is no need to be concerned about job security with the introduction of this robot. He emphasized that it will take several years before robots like Jarmo are commonly utilized for outdoor tasks. They foresee the robot's use becoming a reality in the coming years, especially for lawn mowing in enclosed areas, as trial assessments will provide valuable insights into its capabilities.
The snow-clearing device being tested is designed to clean a width of about half a meter, which currently limits its application in larger park areas. This is part of the cityโs broader initiative to integrate robotics into public service sectors, aiming for efficiency and mild advancements in municipal operations, while still keeping human workers at the forefront of decision-making processes. Kajaani's testing initiative may pave the way for other municipalities to adopt similar robotic technologies in the future, fostering a modern approach to public landscape maintenance.
