Want to lend a hand to Cuba? A collection campaign is called in the Zócalo
A campaign to collect food and medicines for Cuba will take place from February 14 to 22 in Mexico City to express solidarity with the island nation.
From February 14 to 22, a food and medicine collection campaign has been organized in the Zócalo of Mexico City to show solidarity with Cuba, as announced by various organizations, collectives, and activists. This initiative, titled 'From People to People, Let's End the Blockade', is led by the militant solidarity collective 'Va por Cuba' and the José Martí Association of Cubans residing in Mexico. The campaign aims to demonstrate that 'Cuba is not alone', amidst the ongoing economic hardships faced by the island due to the U.S. blockade.
The organizers emphasize that the U.S. blockade is designed to economically suffocate the island, creating significant challenges for its citizens. In response to this aggression, the Mexican people are rallying together to support Cuba during its time of need. The campaign not only seeks to provide immediate aid in the form of food and medical supplies but also highlights the importance of solidarity among nations and communities in facing external pressures.
This campaign is particularly timely given the recent political and economic turmoil in Venezuela, which directly impacts Cuba's oil supply. Following the military interventions in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, the ability of Cuba to secure essential resources has been further jeopardized. The solidarity effort led by Mexican activists thus not only serves as a humanitarian response but also as a political statement against the sanctions imposed on Cuba, reiterating the connections between these neighboring countries in the face of adversity.
