Submarines are sailing slowly, but to the goal
Poland is negotiating a significant arms purchase involving submarines while emphasizing domestic industrial development.
The article discusses the ongoing negotiations in Poland regarding the acquisition of submarines, focusing on a government-to-government agreement signed in December. Key aspects of the negotiations involve not only the price and delivery times but also the transfer of technology to Polish shipyards, particularly PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, so they can handle the complete servicing of these submarines, known as MRO. This intention underscores a shift towards enhancing local industrial capabilities alongside military procurement.
Konrad Gołota, the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of State Assets, mentioned that the Orka submarine program represents a transformative approach to Poland's defense procurement strategy. The government has placed a strong emphasis on fostering the domestic defense industry, indicating a preference for local production and servicing of military assets. Additionally, a preliminary declaration from Sweden suggests interest in purchasing a ship similar to the Rescuer, which is set to begin construction at the Polish shipyard, highlighting the potential for collaborative defense manufacturing in the region.
The negotiation process also involves Admiral Jarosław Wypijewski, who will be responsible for coordinating various facets of the discussions across industrial sectors until August 2025. This strategic acquisition aims to modernize Poland's naval capabilities, reflecting the country's intention to bolster its defense posture while simultaneously investing in local industrial competencies, ultimately contributing to national security and economic development.
