Lagos trains, screens drivers to reduce traffic crashes

The Lagos State Government has launched an initiative to train and screen commercial drivers in order to reduce traffic accidents.

The Lagos State Government has initiated a new program called the Drivers’ Care Initiative, aimed at addressing the high rate of road crashes in the state. This initiative includes comprehensive eye tests and health screenings for commercial drivers, along with additional measures like substance-abuse testing and safety education, ensuring that drivers are both physically and mentally fit to operate vehicles safely. The outreach took place in the Lekki area, drawing large participation from commercial drivers eager to contribute to safer roads.

During the program, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transport and Logistics, Hassan Adekoya, emphasized the initiative's necessity in light of the alarming increase in vehicular accidents. With an estimated 2,000 commercial drivers targeted by the outreach, the program seeks to enhance driver awareness of road safety and promote better driving habits through training and sensitisation efforts. This multifaceted approach signals the government’s commitment to reducing road accidents through active engagement with drivers.

As this initiative unfolds, it reflects a proactive strategy by the Lagos State Government to tackle the pressing issue of road safety. By focusing on both the physical health of drivers and their educational needs regarding safety, the program hopes to foster a culture of responsibility among commercial drivers and ultimately reduce the incidence of traffic-related accidents in Lagos. If successful, it may serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges regarding road safety and driver health.
