"Step by Step, I Feel My Parents..." Nowomov's Heartfelt 'Kiss and Cry'

Maxim Nowomov, an American figure skater, honored his deceased parents during his performance at the Winter Olympics qualifiers.

Maxim Nowomov, a 24-year-old figure skater representing the United States, shared a poignant moment at the 2026 Winter Olympics stage in Milan, paying tribute to his late parents who tragically perished in a plane crash. After completing his short program performance on November 11, Nowomov was overcome with emotion, pulling out a photograph taken with his parents when he was just three years old. The crash in January 2022 claimed the lives of 67 passengers, including promising young skaters and their families, leaving a profound impact on the figure skating community.

Nowomov's parents, Vadim Nowomov and Evgenia Shushkova, were both accomplished skaters, having won the pair championship at the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships before moving to the USA to become coaches. At the time of their untimely death, they were returning from a training camp in Kansas, where they had been coaching young skaters. Maxim attended the camp too but was fortunate enough to have taken an earlier flight. Following the loss of his parents, he faced significant emotional challenges and struggled to train, but he persevered, ultimately earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team by placing third in the national qualifiers.

This was Nowomov's first appearance at the Olympics, and he emotionally reflected on the experience, stating, 'Each step I took on the ice made me feel my parents' support.' He expressed his inner turmoil, feeling both the urge to cry and to laugh at the end of his performance. Looking skyward, he recalled saying to himself, 'We just did it,' capturing the essence of his tribute and his parents' everlasting influence on his life and career.
