Suspected herders’ attack leaves five dead in Benue

Armed herders have killed five individuals in a coordinated attack in a Benue State community, causing widespread fear and displacement among residents.

In a tragic incident in Nigeria's Benue State, suspected armed herders launched a brutal attack on the Tuutuu community in Entekpa Ward of the Otukpo Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of five people. Local officials report that the attack, described as well-coordinated and premeditated, has left the village largely deserted as residents flee in fear. The community has been previously targeted in similar violence, raising concerns about ongoing insecurity in the region.

The ward head, Mr. Oliver Inalegwu, reported the incident to journalists, confirming that the attack was carried out under deceptive circumstances. The attackers reportedly used the movement of cattle as a ruse to mask their actual intentions. Chairman of the Otukpo Local Government Area, Mr. Maxwell Ogri, emphasized that the operation was meticulously planned, with the assailants positioned strategically to launch their assault effectively.

This incident has sparked outrage and fear among local residents, highlighting the continuing violence between herders and farming communities in Nigeria. The situation underscores the urgent need for government intervention and security measures to protect vulnerable communities from such violent conflicts, which have frequently escalated into deadly confrontations over land and resources.
