Gogolev in 10th after men’s short program in Milan

Canadian figure skater Stephen Gogolev ranks 10th following the men's short program at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games.

At the Milan Cortina Olympic Games, Canadian figure skater Stephen Gogolev currently sits in 10th place after successfully completing his men's short program. The 21-year-old from Toronto scored 87.41 points with a routine set to "Mugzy’s Move" by Royal Crown Revue, which features a vibrant portrayal of a 1920s Prohibition-era gangster. Despite facing a challenge where one of his boot laces came loose, Gogolev impressively executed two quad jumps, thrilling the crowd at Milano Ice Skating Arena.

The audience erupted in cheers as Gogolev landed his opening quad toe loop followed by a triple-toe loop. His performance, however, was marred by an over-rotation on his triple axel, resulting in him needing to place a foot down, which became his significant misstep during the routine. Currently leading the competition is Ilia Malinin from the United States, who is nicknamed the “Quad God” and topped the standings with 108.16 points, showcasing a commanding performance that left little doubt about his skills. Second place was taken by Japan's Yuma Kagiyama, the 2022 Olympic silver medallist, while Adam Siao Him Fa from France secured third place.

This short program marks an important moment for Gogolev as he represents Canada in a highly competitive field at the Olympics. While currently in 10th place, there is still hope for improvement in the upcoming free skate, where the rankings can significantly change. Gogolev's performance, combined with the spirited atmosphere of the event, highlights the excitement and unpredictability of figure skating at the Olympic level, making the ongoing competition keenly anticipated by fans and spectators.
