Without buses, without classes: rural students miss the start of the school year in Campo Grande

Students living in rural settlements near Campo Grande, Brazil, miss the start of the school year due to a lack of school transportation.

Thousands of students in the State Education Network returned to classes on Monday (9) in Mato Grosso do Sul; however, those living in rural settlements near Campo Grande are facing challenges getting to school due to a lack of school transportation. Reports indicate that at least 50 students from two settlements in the Jaraguari region have been without transportation since the start of the school year. This lack of service has resulted in many students being unable to attend classes during the crucial initial days.

Residents have voiced that the absence of transportation significantly impacts families who cannot afford to take their children to school independently. A local farmer, Cris Oliveira, pointed out the difficulties, stating that without transport, students simply cannot get to school as not every parent has the means to drive them. One student, who is in her final year and eager to attend school, expressed her frustration at not being able to go due to the transportation issue, highlighting the emotional toll this situation has on the students eager to start the year.

Additionally, this problem brings to light broader issues regarding accessibility to education for students in rural areas, with families in the settlement of Estrela also relying heavily on the availability of school transport. The lack of a dependable school bus service not only disrupts education but also raises questions about the commitments of local authorities to ensure that all students have equal access to schooling, regardless of their geographic location. This oversight could have long-term implications on the educational landscape in rural regions, affecting future educational attainment and opportunities for these students.
