G. Nausėda on the Restoration of Relations with China: We Want Equal Dialogue
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda emphasizes the need for equal dialogue with China while discussing the status of Taiwan's representative office in Lithuania.
In a recent television interview on LRT, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda addressed the ongoing diplomatic tensions between Lithuania and China, particularly in regard to Taiwan's representative office in Vilnius. He articulated that China demands Lithuania rectify what they consider a mistake, referring to the recognition of Taiwan's representation. Despite this pressure, Nausėda affirmed that Taiwan's office will continue to operate, and its representatives intend to maintain friendly relations.
Nausėda reiterated that both the Taiwanese office and Lithuania's office in Taipei are not diplomatic missions, aligning Lithuania's stance with the One China principle. He expressed the need for respect from China, emphasizing that Lithuania is not in a subordinate position but rather wishes to have a balanced and respectful dialogue, regardless of the significant differences in the countries’ sizes.
The President's comments highlight the importance of mutual respect in international relations. He stated that Lithuania desires to elevate its diplomatic relations with China beyond the current unsatisfactory state, suggesting that better understanding and respect could foster improved diplomatic ties. As tensions continue over this issue, Lithuania appears poised to affirm its independent foreign policy while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
