Europol: Cocaine Ring Revealed in Iceland
A criminal network smuggling cocaine from South America to Iceland has been dismantled, with 24 arrests made across Europe.
Europol announced the dismantling of a criminal network that was transporting cocaine from South America to Iceland. Since early February, Europol's operations led to the arrests of 24 individuals, including eleven on Icelandic soil. The arrests spanned other countries such as Lithuania, Spain, Belgium, and Denmark, showcasing the international reach of this drug trafficking operation.
The scheme involved intermediaries who concealed the cocaine either in luggage or by swallowing packets. These individuals traveled from South America to Iceland via Spain, demonstrating the complex logistics of the drug route. In some instances, the drugs were also transported in liquid form, indicating a sophisticated method of smuggling that evaded detection.
Once the cocaine arrived in Iceland, it was distributed locally by the criminal network. The illegal profits generated from the drug trade were reportedly laundered through real estate and various assets in Lithuania, highlighting the financial implications and the need for continuous monitoring of similar networks across Europe.
