UN warns: Severe food crisis threatens children in Sudan
The UN warns that children in Sudan are facing a severe food crisis, urging immediate global action to address the ongoing humanitarian disaster.
The United Nations has issued a grave warning regarding a severe food crisis impacting children in Sudan, emphasizing the urgent need for the international community to act and not turn a blind eye to the ongoing humanitarian tragedy. The situation is particularly dire in North Darfur, where widespread famine is reported amidst the ongoing violent conflict between the army and Rapid Support Forces, which has led to significant loss of life and displacement of over 11 million people since April 2023.
Experts in food security have indicated that acute malnutrition has reached famine thresholds in two additional areas of North Darfur, specifically Um Boro and Karnoi, exacerbating an already critical situation where more than half of the children in certain regions are suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies. The rising rates of hunger are coupled with health challenges, rendering many children vulnerable to diseases caused by malnutrition, like diarrhea and respiratory illnesses.
Ricardo Perez, a spokesperson for UNICEF, highlighted at a press conference in Geneva that the situation deteriorates daily, and time is running out for the affected children. He underscored that hunger and malnutrition-related diseases are becoming fatal threats due to the weakened healthcare and water systems in these areas, stressing the need for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of life and suffering among Sudan's youngest citizens.
