Carpooling: the Île-de-France region launches a free centralized service
The Île-de-France region has launched a free carpooling service, called Covoit IDFM, to centralize various previously subsidized carpooling options and encourage this practice, particularly in areas with less transportation access.
The Île-de-France region has introduced a new centralized carpooling service called Covoit IDFM, which aims to streamline previously scattered subsidized carpooling services. This initiative, launched by Île-de-France Mobilités in partnership with the operator Karos, replaces multiple services that had been available since 2021. By leveraging a central database of drivers, the region hopes to promote carpooling, especially in the outer suburbs where public transport options are limited.
The Covoit IDFM application offers benefits for users holding a Navigo pass, including two free rides per day. In addition to encouraging sustainable transport practices, the initiative aims to provide a cost-effective alternative for commuters in regions with inadequate transit services. The region will compensate drivers, incentivizing more individuals to participate in the carpooling system.
As urban areas face increasing congestion and environmental concerns, the Covoit IDFM service represents a strategic effort by the Île-de-France region to promote carpooling as a viable solution. This initiative not only caters to the needs of commuters looking for affordable transport options but also aligns with broader sustainability goals in the region, contributing to reduced traffic and cleaner air.
