Electoral Act: Senate’s approach ensures transparent elections – Orji Kalu
Senator Orji Kalu supports the Senate's approval of electronic transmission of election results to enhance the transparency and credibility of Nigeria's electoral process.
Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, has voiced his approval of the Senate's recent decision to approve the electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria. He believes that this initiative is a significant step towards increasing transparency, fairness, and credibility within the electoral framework of the country. Kalu expressed his support during an emergency plenary session and emphasized how this amendment to the Electoral Act would revolutionize the way results are communicated, ensuring that they are shared more efficiently and effectively across Nigeria.
The newly adopted Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act allows presiding officers to transmit results electronically once Form EC8A has been signed and completed. Kalu highlighted that this electronic method will become the primary means of transmitting election results where technology is accessible and operational. This significant shift reflects an ongoing trend in improving electoral processes, aiming to reduce human error and potential manipulation associated with traditional manual reporting.
Despite the advantages of electronic transmission, Kalu acknowledged that there might be scenarios where technological failures could occur. In such cases, he assured that duly signed Form EC8A would still stand as the valid and primary source of results. This balanced approach is anticipated to instill greater confidence among the electorate, thus contributing positively towards the overall integrity of Nigeria’s elections.
