‘Sizzurp’: Fake cough syrup being sold in Montreal can be lethal, officials warn
Montreal health officials are warning of a lethal fake cough syrup known as 'Sizzurp' that resembles approved medications and may contain dangerous opioids and benzodiazepines.
Montreal Public Health officials have issued a grave warning about a counterfeit cough syrup being sold in the city, known by street names like 'Sizzurp' and 'Lean'. This fake product is designed to mimic the appearance of genuine cough medication and is labeled as 'promethazine with codeine oral solution'. However, instead of the expected ingredients, it contains the highly potent opioid protonitazene and benzodiazepine, posing severe health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
The health department has raised alarms due to the potential for overdose and death associated with this product. Reports indicate that varying mixtures of harmful substances have been discovered in these deceptively labeled containers, leading to the dangers of accidental overdose. Notably, officials referenced a case from 2023 where a person died of an overdose related to this substance in Laval, further emphasizing the grave consequences of its consumption.
Symptoms of an overdose include physical signs such as bluish lips and fingernails, alongside breathing difficulties, which could escalate to cardiopulmonary arrest. In response to an overdose situation, officials urge individuals to call 911 immediately and provide naloxone if available, stressing the need for quick action to save lives.
