83rd Anniversary: Commemoration of Sophie and Hans Scholl as well as Christoph Probst

A service will be held at the Dachau memorial on February 22nd to commemorate Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, and Christoph Probst, who were executed by the Nazi regime in 1943 for their resistance efforts.

On February 22, 2023, a memorial service will take place at the Versöhnungskirche of the Dachau concentration camp memorial to honor Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, and Christoph Probst, who were executed by the Nazi justice system at Munich-Stadelheim prison 80 years ago. These three young adults were key figures in the student resistance group known as the White Rose, which passionately opposed the Nazi regime with calls for peace and justice.

The service will commence at 10 AM and will be broadcast live on Deutschlandfunk radio. The program includes readings from Sophie Scholl's letters by Julia Cortis, and songs performed by singer Helena Huber that held special significance to Sophie. Regional Bishop Thomas Prieto Peral will deliver the sermon, emphasizing the enduring impact of their sacrifice on modern-day society and the continuing fight against oppression.

To further commemorate the legacy of Christoph Probst, his granddaughter will travel from the Netherlands to share reflections on his life and contributions to the resistance. The service also pays homage to Vasyl Volodko, a 101-year-old Ukrainian survivor, highlighting the broader histories of those who resisted tyranny and the importance of remembering these stories in commemorative practices today.
