Comic Finland is competing with ten works
The nominees for the Sarjakuva-Finlandia prize have been announced, featuring ten domestic comic albums competing for the 2026 award.
The nominees for the Sarjakuva-Finlandia prize, which honors excellence in Finnish comics, have been officially announced. Ten comic albums produced by domestic creators will contend for the accolade, with the winner set to be determined by Yle's foreign affairs reporter Hanna Visala. This annual award aims to spotlight the growing impact and innovation within the Finnish comic book scene, showcasing the diverse talent and stories that are emerging from the country.
Among the nominees are notable titles such as 'Vajoava Ateneum 2 – Hyödyllisen taiteen puolesta' by Matti Hagelberg and 'Lellikki' by Juliana Hyrri. Each entry brings its unique perspective and artistic style, reflecting the richness of Finnish cultural narratives. The shortlisted works will be evaluated for their artistic merit and storytelling, contributing to the recognition of comics as a significant form of literature in Finland.
The Sarjakuva-Finlandia award will be presented at the Tampere Kuplii comic festival in March, with a prize sum of €5,000. This event not only promotes Finnish comics but also gathers creators and fans, fostering a community centered around comic artistry. As the festival approaches, anticipation builds around which comic will take home the prize and further raise the profile of Finnish comics on both a national and international stage.
