The Oceanographic Institute confirms a new record of great white shark in the Spanish Mediterranean

The Spanish Oceanographic Institute has confirmed a new sighting of a great white shark in the Mediterranean, indicating its rare presence in these waters.

The Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC) has documented a new confirmed record of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) in Spanish Mediterranean waters. This finding, which was recently published in the scientific journal Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, is significant as it provides new insights into the distribution of this iconic species, considered vulnerable in the western Mediterranean. The research was carried out in collaboration with the University of Cádiz (UCA).

The documented specimen is a juvenile approximately two meters long, accidentally captured in April 2023 within Spain's Exclusive Economic Zone. Genetic testing was used to confirm the species identification, highlighting the importance of scientific innovation in marine biodiversity studies. Since the 19th century, the great white shark has maintained a presence in these coasts, although it is extremely infrequent.

This new record sheds light on the need for continued monitoring and research regarding the great white shark, which faces threats such as overfishing and habitat loss. The findings may lead to increased conservation efforts in the region to protect this vulnerable species and its habitat, emphasizing the interdisciplinary approach needed to tackle the challenges of marine conservation.
