Tarcísio sanctions law authorizing pet burials in cemeteries in SP
The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, has sanctioned a law allowing the burial of pets in family-owned plots, with regulations to be determined by municipal funeral services.
On Tuesday, October 10, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas of São Paulo signed a law permitting the burial of pets, specifically dogs and cats, in cemeteries designated for their owners or their owner's family members. This legislation, initiated by state deputies Eduardo Nóbrega and Ricardo França, both members of the Podemos party, aims to provide a formal and respectful means for families to inter their beloved pets.
The law mandates that municipal funeral services will establish the specific regulations governing the burial process for pets. Additionally, private cemeteries will have the autonomy to implement their own guidelines as long as they comply with legal requirements. This flexibility allows for the establishment of dedicated areas for pet burials while considering community needs and preferences.
Advocates Nóbrega and França emphasize that the initiative responds to society's increasing recognition of the emotional bonds that people develop with their pets. The move is seen as a compassionate solution to a growing trend where families wish to handle the end-of-life arrangements for their animals within a familiar and respected environment, acknowledging the significant role pets play in family life.
