EFET: Recall of Unsafe Jelly-type Foods - The Reason

The Greek food authority EFET has recalled unsafe jelly-type foods that contain psychoactive substances following consumer complaints and laboratory testing.

The Greek food authority, EFET, through its Regional Directorate of Attica, has initiated a recall of jelly-type foods marketed by 'EC STEVIA A.E.' after receiving consumer complaints and conducting related inspections. These products, sold under the brand 'SMOKE CARTEL E.E.', were found to be circulating in various flavors both online and through retail stores, raising significant public health concerns.

A laboratory examination conducted by the Athens Chemical Services discovered the presence of muscimol, a psychoactive compound derived from the Amanita muscaria mushroom. This discovery is particularly alarming as muscimol can have mind-altering effects, which categorize these products not only as unsafe but potentially harmful. EFET emphasizes that these products masquerade as ordinary sweets, misleading consumers regarding their safety and suitability for consumption.

Given the implications for consumer safety and public health, the authority is urging retailers to collaborate in removing these products from shelves and advising consumers to dispose of any such products in their possession. This incident underscores the necessity for continuous monitoring and regulation of food products to protect public health from potentially dangerous substances, especially in a market where such items can easily be accessed through online platforms.
