More short-distance flights: Lufthansa opens base for City Airlines in Frankfurt

Lufthansa has established a new base for its short-haul subsidiary City Airlines in Frankfurt, increasing its flight connections and hiring new staff.

Lufthansa has expanded its operations with the opening of a new base for its City Airlines subsidiary in Frankfurt, following successful operations from Munich. This new base will offer flights to various destinations including Manchester, Berlin, Valencia, Düsseldorf, and Málaga, with plans to increase the routes further by summer to include major cities such as London-Heathrow and Stockholm.

The Frankfurt base is set to enhance Lufthansa's short-haul offerings as it aims to grow its fleet to seven Airbus A320 Neo planes by September. Currently, the airline manages a fleet of 13 City Airlines aircraft based in Munich. The establishment of this new base is part of Lufthansa's broader strategy to tap into the growing demand for short-distance travel, especially post-pandemic, by providing more direct flights to popular destinations.

To support this expansion, Lufthansa is actively recruiting personnel for cockpit and cabin crew in Frankfurt, having already hired about 60 new employees. This move not only signifies growth for the airline but also reflects a resurgence in the aviation industry as cities resume connectivity and travelers seek increased travel options across Europe, indicating a positive trend in the recovery of air travel.
