Ukraine's skeleton athlete Heraskevičs: Thank you to the Latvian people for their support

Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladislavs Heraskevičs will compete in the Olympics with a black armband after being prohibited from using a helmet featuring images of Ukrainian athletes killed in the Russian aggression.

Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladislavs Heraskevičs has received clarification from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the attire he can wear during competitions at the upcoming Olympic Games. Although he is not allowed to compete with a helmet that features images of Ukrainian sports figures who were killed in the Russian aggression, he can wear a black armband to memorialize them. The IOC stated that this decision was made as a compromise to respect both Olympic competition standards and Heraskevičs' wish to honor his fallen compatriots through his sports platform.

IOC spokesperson Mark Adams emphasized that this decision reflects an understanding and empathy towards Heraskevičs. He mentioned that the athlete's sentiments have been apparent through his social media posts and training sessions. Adams pointed out that while the IOC is concerned with the imagery used during competitions, it does not restrict the freedom of expression for athletes in other forums, such as press conferences or after events.

Heraskevičs, who was also the flag bearer for Ukraine during the Olympic opening ceremony, has pledged to draw attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the impact it has had on the country’s athletes. His commitment showcases not only his dedication to his sport but also his desire to bring awareness to the tragic repercussions of the war, making a powerful statement on an international stage.
