Major Setback for Bhullar, Convicted in 1993 Delhi Bombings, Early Release Denied

The Delhi Sentence Review Board has rejected Devender Pal Singh Bhullar's plea for early release from prison regarding the 1993 Delhi bombings incident.

The Delhi Sentence Review Board has delivered a significant ruling against Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, who was convicted for his role in the 1993 Delhi bombings, which resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and injuries to 31 others. The Board recently convened and dismissed Bhullar's application for an early release, upholding earlier decisions which had also denied his release. Bhullar, who was initially sentenced to death in 2001, had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment in 2014 due to various legal considerations and health issues.

Despite his transfer in June 2015 from Delhi's Tihar Jail to Amritsar Central Jail for health reasons, the debate concerning his early release has been prolonged. The Board had previously postponed a decision on his request in 2022, even when concerns about his deteriorating health and vegetative state were raised. In its latest meeting scheduled for 2024, the Board once again declined to grant Bhullar the release, noting the significant opposition from some members who highlighted the impact of his actions as a terrorist, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives.

This ongoing legal battle reflects the complexities of justice in cases involving terrorism and the balance between human rights considerations and public safety. Bhullar's case continues to be a contentious issue in Indian society, spotlighting the long-lasting consequences of terrorist activities and the importance placed by the authorities on upholding sentences for such serious offenses.
