Romantic scammers target seniors: shower them with attention and leave them without savings

Romantic scams aimed at older individuals continue to be a frequent issue in Lithuania, reflecting their vulnerability and trust in personal connections.

In Lithuania, a recent report indicates that romantic scams remain one of the most prevalent forms of fraud, particularly affecting seniors. According to Julija Markeliūnė, head of digital inclusion at "Telia", the vulnerability of older people is influenced by their values and longing for connection. Although the total financial loss due to such scams decreased significantly from €1.1 million in 2024 to approximately €312,000 in 2025, the intensity of these crimes continues to be high, highlighting a persistent issue in society.

The report from the Money Laundering Prevention Center revealed a notable increase in romantic scams during the last quarter of 2025, with 138 reported cases resulting in losses totaling €109,000. Each incident averaged a loss of €792 per victim, painting a grim picture of the financial and emotional detriment caused by these scams. The report emphasizes that behind each case lies a sensitive personal story, where the true loss transcends monetary value, as it inflicts damage on victims' trust and hope for companionship.

The persistence of such scams raises critical questions about the awareness and safeguards in place to protect vulnerable populations, particularly seniors. Scammers exploit the deep human longing for connection and intimacy, making this type of fraud not only financially damaging but also emotionally devastating. Addressing this ongoing issue requires a concerted effort from authorities, community organizations, and families to raise awareness and implement protective measures, fostering a safer environment for the elderly against such deceptive practices.
