Polish sailors stand out in Europe. They sail in large groups and take the helm of yachts themselves
Polish sailors are increasingly sailing in larger groups and taking on the responsibility of navigating their own yachts, reflecting a strong social and independent sailing culture.
A recent report from Boataround.com highlights the unique sailing culture of Polish sailors, revealing that they often participate in sailing trips as social events, with average crew sizes significantly above the global mean. Analysis of thousands of reservations for the 2025 season shows that the average Polish sailing team consists of eight members, with nearly half of all bookings involving groups of eight or more. This trend underscores the group-oriented nature of Polish sailing, contrasting with the more typical smaller crew sizes worldwide.
The preferences in vessel selection for Polish sailors also reflect their social habits; while traditional sailing yachts are the most popular choice, comprising 65% of bookings, there is a notable inclination towards spacious catamarans, which are favored significantly more by Polish sailors than by the global average. This preference indicates a desire for comfort and space during their outings, which further enhances the group experience during sailing trips.
Moreover, Polish sailors exhibit a strong tendency towards independence on the water, with only a small fraction (1.3%) employing paid skippers. The vast majority are proud holders of sailing licenses, which empowers them to navigate their own vessels. This autonomy not only signifies their skills but also contributes to a richer, more fulfilling sailing experience, as it fosters a deeper connection with the activity and camaraderie among crew members.
