Ogun LG denies election of new monarch, warns against false claims

The Ipokia Local Government in Ogun State has clarified that no new monarch has been elected in Ikolaje Idiroko, urging the public to disregard premature claims.

The Ipokia Local Government in Ogun State has issued a statement confirming that the election of a new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko has not yet taken place, following the death of the previous monarch, Oba John Olakunle Ojo JP (Afiditi II). The council emphasized that the succession process is still ongoing and that establishing a new candidate is being conducted in accordance with local customs and the Chiefs Law of Ogun State. Therefore, they cautioned against any false claims of election or selection made by individuals or parties not involved in the official process.

The local government, represented by Secretary Johnson Babajide, highlighted the importance of transparency in such a delicate matter that concerns the traditions and governance of the community. The council underscored that the Odunfa Ruling House is the next in line based on a rotational agreement and that their nomination exercise occurred recently on February 4, 2026. The announcement serves to inform the public about the proper channels and respect the historical context of the monarchy in the region.

By clarifying the situation, the Ipokia Local Government aims to prevent misinformation that may disrupt the ongoing succession process and maintain the integrity of the traditional leadership in Ikolaje Idiroko. This situation is critical as local governance and traditional leadership play a significant role in community cohesion and societal norms within Ogun State.
