Techie who left a million-dollar job in the US returns to India, says life is better here
An Indian tech professional, Ujjwal Chadha, shares his experience of leaving a high-paying job at Microsoft in the US and returning to India, which he claims has significantly improved his quality of life.
Ujjwal Chadha, a developer who worked at Microsoft in Seattle, walked away from a lucrative salary of $250,000 per year, believing that life in America was not as fulfilling as one might expect. Contrary to popular belief that securing a high-paying job in the US sets one for a comfortable life, Chadha highlighted that in Seattle, his earnings only afforded him a comfortable lifestyle, without the deeper satisfaction he craved. In his posts on social media, he emphasized that his transition back to India marked not just a physical return but a substantial upgrade in his quality of life.
He particularly noted the advantages brought about by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), explaining that the same amount of money, which seemed substantial in the US, would stretch much further in India. Though earning a significant salary in Seattle allowed for basic comforts, he found that living in Delhi, where he resides in his family's home, has dramatically reduced his expenses—up to 80% less in rent alone. This financial breathing room has allowed him to save 90% of his income, contributing to a richer quality of life.
Chadha's reflections raise important points about the value of familial connections, quality of life, and mental peace. Many expatriates chase financial success abroad, often without considering the overall impact on their happiness and well-being. His story serves as an eye-opener for others, illustrating that happiness can sometimes be found not in the pursuit of wealth, but in the embrace of home, family, and a balanced life.
