Uganda: UCC Warns Broadcasters Against Hosting Election Dispute Claims On Air
The Uganda Communications Commission has cautioned broadcasters against airing claims of election disputes made by unsuccessful candidates.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a public notice warning Uganda's broadcasters against the airing of unverified and sensational claims made by unsuccessful electoral candidates contesting the results of recent parliamentary and local government elections. This warning comes as there is a growing trend where candidates attempt to challenge officially declared results through media channels rather than following proper legal processes.
UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo emphasized that the Electoral Commission holds the sole constitutional authority to declare election results in the country. He called on the media and the public to respect this authority and reminded those dissatisfied with election outcomes to adhere to lawful measures to express their grievances. Instead of taking to the airwaves, candidates are urged to pursue legal avenues by filing petitions within the stipulated timelines set by law.
This directive by the UCC reflects the Commission's commitment to maintaining integrity within the electoral process and ensuring that public discourse, especially regarding sensitive political matters, remains factual and respectful of legal frameworks. By discouraging the spread of unfounded claims on broadcast media, the UCC seeks to control misinformation that may undermine the democratic processes in Uganda.
