None of the Latvian skiers pass the qualification for the classic sprint
None of the Latvian cross-country skiers qualified for the classic sprint event at the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
During the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Latvian cross-country skiers Kitija Auziņa, Samanta Krampe, and Linda Kaparkalēja failed to advance past the qualification round in the classic sprint event. Auziņa performed the best among the Latvians, finishing in 71st place, followed by Krampe in 78th and Kaparkalēja in 84th. The race, which involved a distance of one and a half kilometers, saw Sweden's Linna Svāna achieving the fastest time of three minutes and 36.21 seconds.
In the qualification round, only the top 30 athletes advance to the elimination phase or quarter-finals, vying for a place in the semi-finals. Auziņa completed her race in four minutes and 16.11 seconds, lagging over 26 seconds behind the cut-off for the top 30. Krampe's time was four minutes and 22.81 seconds, while Kaparkalēja finishing close behind her with a time of four minutes and 27.54 seconds. A total of 89 athletes competed in this event.
Later in the day, the men will also compete in the classic sprint, with Latvian athletes Raimo Vīgants, Lauris Kaparkalējs, and Niks Saulītis taking to the course. Notably, Vīgants is participating in his second Olympic Games, reflecting the ongoing commitment and participation of Latvian athletes on this international stage.
