Former Apulanta guitarist elected as town mayor – previous mayor left with a hefty severance package
Sami Ylipihlaja, former guitarist for Apulanta, has been elected as the new mayor of Kuhmoisten with a narrow majority.
Sami Ylipihlaja has been elected as the new mayor of Kuhmoisten with a vote tally of 11 to 9, succeeding Valtteri Väyrynen who left the position amidst controversy and a significant severance payment. Ylipihlaja, who currently holds a position as the director of well-being in Tampere, brings a diverse background to the role, including previous experience as the leisure director in Ylöjärvi and as the acting mayor of Huittinen.
His connection to the music scene enhances his public persona – Ylipihlaja is known for his past as a guitarist with the Finnish band Apulanta from 1998 to 2000. This musical history could resonate with local constituents familiar with his work both in governance and the arts, potentially enhancing his appeal as a leader in the community.
The previous mayor's resignation came after a period of distrust highlighted by allegations of poor management reported by staff, leading to calls for Väyrynen’s dismissal. The town council's decision to appoint Ylipihlaja marks a new chapter in Kuhmoisten’s local governance, with expectations for improved leadership and transparency moving forward.
