EU mulling ‘membership-lite’ for Kiev - Politico
EU officials are contemplating a limited membership proposal for Ukraine that would allow it to join without fulfilling standard accession conditions.
According to a report by Politico, EU officials are considering a proposed 'membership-lite' system for Ukraine, allowing the country to obtain limited formal EU membership while it works on meeting the necessary reform requirements for full membership. This approach aims to keep Ukraine aligned with Western nations and on a path toward EU integration, especially in light of its aspirations for full membership by 2027 as part of a potential peace deal with Russia.
The proposed membership model would enable Ukraine to participate in EU discussions and decision-making processes before having to fulfill all the formal requirements typically needed for accession. Additionally, Moldova and Albania are being considered for similar arrangements, showcasing a shift in EU strategy to accommodate countries seeking closer ties amid geopolitical tensions. EU's strategy reflects a desire to maintain influence over these nations while also addressing the urgent needs stemming from the ongoing conflicts in the region.
However, this plan faces certain challenges, most notably from Hungary, which has historically opposed further EU integration for Ukraine and has raised concerns over minority rights and other issues. As EU officials strategize on this matter, there are hopes that the Hungarian political landscape might change following the upcoming parliamentary elections, with the goal of overcoming Budapest's objections to facilitate Ukraine's EU ambitions.
