Do the USA, Russia or China threaten peace? What Germans think, according to a poll

A recent survey shows that a significant portion of the German population views the USA as the greatest threat to global peace, reflecting a marked change in sentiment compared to previous years.

A new poll conducted by the Allensbach Institute for the Center for Strategic and Advanced Management reveals a substantial shift in the perception of the United States among the German public regarding global peace. In the survey, about 65% of respondents named the USA as the biggest threat to international stability, a drastic increase from 46% the previous year. In 2024, only 24% had considered the USA a threat, highlighting a notable decline in trust and confidence in American foreign policy and its implications for global security.

Furthermore, the survey indicates a diminishing belief in the USA's commitment to NATO allies. Only 32% of the German populace expressed confidence that the US would provide military assistance in the event of an attack on a NATO member state. A significant portion, 35%, doubted this commitment, while 33% remained uncertain. This skepticism towards US support may alter Germany's security dynamics and influence its strategic decisions concerning defense collaborations within NATO.

Interestingly, the poll also assessed perceptions of Russia and China, placing Russia as a more significant threat than both the USA and China in the eyes of the German respondents. This suggests a complex geopolitical landscape where historical animosities and current conflicts, particularly with Russia, are reshaping public opinion and national security priorities in Germany, reflecting a growing concern over international relations.
