The operetta "Judith" will be performed in multiple Latvian cities from March 14 to April 14, featuring prominent local artists and a live orchestra.
From March 14 to April 14, the Operetta Theatre will showcase the operetta "Judith" (subtitled: "In the Flames of Passion") across several Latvian cities including Alūksne, Liepāja, Cēsis, Rēzekne, Slampē, and Riga. The production marks the Latvian premiere of this piece by the renowned Austrian-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár, which had its first performance on October 3. The main roles will feature Anta Jankovska and Dainis Skutelis, or Anastasija Dolgoņenko and Juris Jope, along with various other soloists, a choir, dancers, and an orchestra, under the direction of conductor Atvars Lakstīgala. The performances in Slampē and Riga will feature the promising young conductor Artūrs Plaudis.
This operetta is part of the celebration of Franz Lehár's anniversary this year, emphasizing the cultural significance of this classic work in Latvia. The production has been crafted by Austrian director Gernot Kranner alongside costume designer Alexandra Brandner from Germany and set designer Hervig Libowitcky from Austria. The collaborative effort highlights the international ties within the arts, demonstrating how such productions foster cultural exchange and appreciation.
With the inclusion of multimedia artist Ineta Sipunova and choreographer Ieva Kemlere, the production of "Judith" is expected to provide a rich theatrical experience, appealing to a broad audience beyond traditional operetta fans. This initiative not only promotes local talent but also revives significant works of operatic literature, ensuring their relevance and accessibility to contemporary audiences in Latvia.
