Presentation on Nuclear Safety in Shipping at the IMO
A Greek nuclear engineering leader discussed the importance of nuclear safety regulations in maritime operations at an IMO conference.
The head of the developing nuclear engineering team at Core Power, Ioannis Kourasis, participated as a speaker in the 12th session of the SDC at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He presented on the topic 'Nuclear Safety at Sea' on behalf of the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO). In his address, Kourasis emphasized the critical need for rigorous and well-documented licensing procedures that ensure the protection of people and the environment in maritime nuclear operations. He highlighted that maritime authorities must leverage existing knowledge when regulating floating nuclear applications.
Kourasis also pointed out the necessity of considering the unique operational conditions of the sea in the planning and design of maritime nuclear technologies. This insight is particularly relevant given the increasing interest in using nuclear energy within shipping and the need for comprehensive safety measures. The audience showed strong engagement with the presentation, which indicates a growing awareness and concern for nuclear safety in maritime contexts.
The revision of the regulatory framework discussed at the session is expected to be a long-term process, suggesting that the implementation of such safety measures will require ongoing dialogue and collaboration among maritime authorities, nuclear experts, and policymakers. This highlights the importance of international cooperation in ensuring safe and sustainable practices in the integration of nuclear technology into the shipping industry.
