A 20-year-old organized football fan has been arrested in connection with arson attacks on the homes of rival fans in Greece.
In Greece, the Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Sports Violence has apprehended a 20-year-old individual linked to two arson attacks that occurred in July 2023. These attacks targeted the residences of organized fans of a rival football club in the areas of Daphne and Agios Dimitrios. Following extensive investigations that included video footage analysis, authorities identified the suspect as an organized fan of another football team, while another accomplice remains at large. The incidents took place in the early hours of July 8, 2023, where the arsonists, riding a motorcycle, targeted the first residence of an organized fan in Daphne. They deployed an improvised incendiary device at the central entrance of the building. After completing that attack, they proceeded to Agios Dimitrios, where they similarly set fire to the residence of another organized fan. These attacks are a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of football-related violence in Greece, prompting discussions on the need for stronger measures against such incidents. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate and reassure the public that they are taking concerted steps to mitigate organized fan violence, underscoring the critical impact such acts have on community safety and the integrity of sports.
