Vance: Only Trump Sets the Red Lines in Negotiations with Iran
US Vice President J.D. Vance stated that President Donald Trump alone determines the red lines in negotiations with Iran, preferring to keep his conditions confidential to maintain negotiating leverage.
During a press conference held in Armenia, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized that President Donald Trump is solely responsible for outlining the red lines in any negotiations with Iran. Vance noted that Trump prefers not to disclose his negotiating terms publicly to preserve flexibility in discussions; however, he will consult with his team prior to deciding on the negotiation trajectory. Vance remarked that during previous negotiations with Iran, Trump was dedicated to reaching a constructive agreement beneficial to Washington and that the entire administration supports this stance.
Furthermore, Vance mentioned that Trump typically determines his negotiation parameters privately, believing that announcing them restricts him. He indicated that Trump would engage in significant discussions with his team and other stakeholders in the coming days and weeks. This approach reflects the administration's strategy to handle diplomatic engagements with Iran cautiously, focusing on the benefits for the United States.
In conjunction with this, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted that it would be prudent for Iran to choose a path toward a negotiated settlement. He reiterated that Trump has been clear about the necessity of addressing the Iranian situation, advocating for a peaceful resolution through strength. This highlights the administration's position that, while negotiations are critical, the U.S. must maintain a firm stance to ensure its interests are protected.
