Grand Mahashivaratri at Somnath 1000 Years After Destruction, 500,000 Devotees Expected

Around 500,000 devotees are expected to attend the Mahashivaratri celebrations at the famous Somnath temple in Gujarat this weekend.

This weekend, the renowned Somnath temple in Gujarat is anticipating around 500,000 devotees for the Mahashivaratri celebrations. The increased attendance at the temple comes in the wake of the 'Somnath Swabhimaan Pdivar,' which took place last month and significantly boosted visitor numbers. Authorities are preparing extensive security and facilities to accommodate the large crowd expected during this religious event.

In the lead-up to the festival on February 15, the district collector, NV Upadhyay, announced that preparations are in full swing to ensure the safety and comfort of the attendees. The Gujarat Tourism Corporation will host cultural events on February 14, 15, and 16, featuring performances by renowned artists, including Kailash Kher, among others. These festivities are part of a broader effort to celebrate and highlight the cultural significance of the temple.

The increased visitor turnout follows the 'Somnath Swabhimaan Pdivar' held from January 8-11, which commemorated the 1000-year anniversary of the first historical attack on the Somnath temple in January 1026. This national event drew significant attention and reverence toward the temple, emphasizing its importance in Indian culture and history, as well as the continuing allure it holds for devotees and tourists alike.
