Democrats will present Pellegrini with a dilemma in the referendum. According to lawyers, he can reject it outright
The Slovak political party Democrats has garnered enough support for a referendum on early elections, but legal experts argue that its proposed question may not be constitutional, complicating President Pellegrini's position.
The Slovak political party, Democrats, announced last week that it has gathered 350,000 signatures from citizens to initiate a referendum that will include a question about early elections. This achievement is notable for a non-parliamentary party, highlighting the political success of this initiative regardless of whether the referendum actually takes place. Historically, mobilizing such a significant number of signatures is a rare feat for parties outside the legislative framework. The last significant attempt to call a referendum was made by the newly established SaS in 2010, and most recently by members of the Slovak Renewal Movement last year, aimed at abolishing sanctions against Vladimir Putin's regime, which President Pellegrini declined to endorse.
