President Yoon: 'I will not forget the two soldiers who did not let go of the control stick'... Memorial for the helicopter crash pilots

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol commemorated the pilots who lost their lives in a recent helicopter crash during training, promising support for their families.

On October 10, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his condolences for the pilots who tragically died in a helicopter crash while conducting training exercises. In a message posted on social media, he honored Chief Warrant Officer Jung Sang-keun and Warrant Officer Jang Hee-seong for their ultimate sacrifice in ensuring the safety of the public. He highlighted their bravery, revealing that the crash site was dangerously close to residential areas, raising concerns about potential casualties had the accident occurred even slightly off-course.

President Yoon reflected on the dedication and sacrifice of these soldiers, affirming that their actions have contributed to the peaceful lives that citizens enjoy today. He conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families who have lost proud sons, husbands, and fathers, acknowledging the immense grief they must be experiencing. Additionally, he assured that the government would not falter in providing fitting honors and support to the families of the fallen heroes.

The accident occurred on the morning of the previous day when an Army Cobra helicopter (AH-1S) crashed into a river in Gapyeong, just 60 meters away from residential neighborhoods. Following the incident, military authorities suspended operations of the same model helicopter and established a task force headed by a military official to investigate the cause of the crash. This tragic event highlights the risks military personnel take during training and the importance of addressing safety measures in such operations.
