The Train of Remembrance Travels Along Italy: 'Foibe, Enough Oblivion'
The Train of Remembrance will journey through Italy from February 10 to March 1, 2026, highlighting the historical events surrounding the foibe massacre and the exile of Italians from the Istrian and Dalmatian regions after World War II.
The 'Treno del Ricordo' is a significant initiative aimed at raising awareness about the forgotten memories of Italian history related to the foibe massacres and the subsequent exodus of Italians from Istria, Fiume, and Dalmatia post-World War II. Launched by Italy's Minister for Sports and Youth, Andrea Abodi, and Tommaso Tanzilli, the president of Italian State Railways, this third edition of the Train of Remembrance seeks to provide a platform for remembrance and justice regarding these historical events that have long been enveloped in silence.
Scheduled to run from February 10 to March 1, 2026, the train will travel from the northern city of Trieste to the southern city of Siracusa, stopping in eleven cities along the way. This symbolic journey mirrors the painful path taken by hundreds of thousands of Italians who chose exile rather than abandon their identity in the face of political change and ethnic persecution after the war. The aim is to foster collective knowledge and consciousness about this chapter of history, transforming personal stories of loss into a shared experience of acknowledgment.
By educating the public and commemorating those affected, the Train of Remembrance underscores the importance of remembering and preventing history from repeating itself. This collective remembrance not only serves as a tribute to the victims of the foibe but also empowers younger generations to understand the historical ramifications of ethnic conflict and the enduring value of cultural identity in Italy.
