The commitment of intellectuals to the truth: "Knowing History to Heal the Past"

A meeting in Montecitorio aimed at transforming the neglected tragedy of the Foibe into a shared memory among various nationalities was led by intellectuals discussing their works on 20th-century Julian-Dalmatian history.

In a recent event held at Montecitorio, titled 'The Memory that Transcends Time,' intellectuals gathered to address the historical tragedy of the Foibe, which has long been overshadowed in public discourse. This meeting, supported by Elisabetta Gardini from Fratelli d'Italia, sought to transform the narrative surrounding these historical events into a broader shared memory that includes not only the Italians affected but also the Slovenians and Croatians. The discussions highlighted the importance of recognizing the diverse impacts of these events on multiple communities rather than settling for a singular shared story.

Professor Davide Rossi from the University of Trieste emphasized the years of neglect surrounding the discussion of Foibe tragedies in public narratives, arguing that acknowledging these past events is crucial for mutual understanding among the regionโ€™s peoples. He called for respect for all historical accounts rather than merely promoting a unified version of history, which may overlook the significant contributions and experiences of different nationalities involved. This viewpoint is shared by many who advocate for a more nuanced understanding of shared history.

Viviana Facchinetti, editor of L'Arena di Pola and a prolific author on the topic of global exiled communities, also spoke at the event, shedding light on her extensive research dedicated to voicing the experiences of ordinary people affected by these historical tragedies since 1985. Furthermore, a book highlighting these narratives was introduced, marking ongoing efforts to elevate awareness and honor the memories of those impacted by the complexities of the past, ultimately fostering a pathway towards healing and reconciliation among affected communities.
