Chamber transforms ANPD into a regulatory agency and defines new positions
Brazil's Chamber of Deputies has approved a provisional measure transforming the ANPD into a regulatory agency and establishing 218 new positions for it.
On Monday, the Chamber of Deputies in Brazil voted to approve a provisional measure that transforms the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) into a regulatory agency. The approval was significant, with 271 votes in favor and 127 against, despite opposition from some political parties including PL, Novo, and representatives from the minority and opposition groups. Supporters of the measure argue that this change is essential for providing the ANPD with the structure needed to effectively implement the regulations established by the recently enacted Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital).
The ECA Digital law, which was approved and sanctioned in September last year, aims to enhance the protection of children and adolescents in digital environments. Proponents of the regulatory transformation assert that a more robust agency is necessary to ensure compliance by digital platforms with these new standards. They highlight how the evolving digital landscape necessitates stronger oversight to protect vulnerable populations online.
The establishment of 218 new positions within the ANPD is intended to bolster its capacity to manage the increased responsibilities that will arise from its regulatory role. This move reflects a broader effort by the Brazilian government to enhance data protection and to establish a strong regulatory framework in light of growing concerns over privacy and safety for younger internet users.
