When Will the Investigation into Nepal's Gen-Z Movement Be Completed? Deadline Extended for the Third Time

The Nepalese government has extended the deadline for the investigative commission regarding the Gen-Z movement violence by 25 days for the third time.

On Monday, the Nepalese government extended the deadline of the commission investigating the violence that occurred during last year's Gen-Z movement by 25 days, marking the third extension of the commission's timeline. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting, setting the new deadline as March 11. The original term was due to end on February 11. The commission is tasked with examining allegations of violence and human rights violations that occurred during youth-led protests against issues such as corruption, nepotism, and a ban on social media.

The investigative commission, formed last September under Interim Prime Minister Susheela Karki's government, is chaired by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki. The commission consists of three members, including former Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Sharma and legal expert Bishweshwar Bhandaari. Its objective is to look into the incidents surrounding the protests that took a violent turn on September 8 and 9, driven by widespread frustrations regarding governmental practices.

As the investigation continues to be extended, it raises concerns over the government's commitment to addressing issues of accountability and justice for the youth involved in the demonstrations. The ongoing delay highlights the complexities and sensitivity surrounding political tensions in Nepal, especially relating to the youth's demand for reforms and transparency in governance.
