There has been an increase in frostbite patients in Latvia this winter, prompting warnings from doctors about cold weather safety.

This winter has seen a notable rise in the number of frostbite cases in Latvia, with hospitals reporting an increased influx of affected individuals. Medical professionals are urging people to take precautions against the cold as the harsh winter weather continues, reiterating the importance of seeking timely medical help rather than waiting until conditions worsen. At the Rīga East Clinical University Hospital alone, 18 patients are currently treated for frostbite, including two individuals who have sustained severe injuries in recent days.

In addition to the health warnings, safety measures regarding ice on lakes and rivers have been highlighted, particularly in Rīga where authorities have had to rescue dozens of people who ventured onto dangerous ice. The police have made it clear that it is illegal to walk on the ice and offenders can face fines of up to 100 euros. Such measures are meant to ensure public safety during the winter months, when the cold can create hazardous conditions.

On a broader note, the Rīga City Council has announced a charitable donation of 100,000 euros to Ukraine to help address energy issues exacerbated by the current conflict. This donation, which is funded by an increase in property tax due to sanctions, indicates not only a local commitment to aid international partners but also engages the community in support through initiatives like "Heat for Ukraine from Latvia," where citizens are encouraged to contribute toward energy support for Ukraine amid the ongoing challenges they face.
