UN: Guterres meeting with Erhürman on Wednesday – Olgin continues contacts with both sides

The UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria A. Olgin, is actively engaged in discussions to promote confidence-building measures between the Cypriot leaders.

Maria A. Olgin, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Cyprus, recently completed her latest visit to Cyprus, where she has been facilitating discussions between the two leaders, Nicos Anastasiades and Tufan Erhürman. The UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the importance of continuing these dialogues to enhance trust and maintain momentum towards potential negotiations for reuniting the divided island. He mentioned that meetings continue to focus on agreed confidence-building measures, including the opening of additional crossing points as soon as possible.

Dujarric reiterated the UN Secretary-General's position that the leaders must demonstrate political will to sustain the progress made so far. The ongoing communication underscores the essential role of international mediation in the Cyprus issue, which remains one of the longest-standing conflicts in Europe. The UN is also trying to reinforce peaceful interactions and cooperation between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities.

Looking ahead, the Secretary-General is scheduled to meet with Tufan Erhürman on February 11 at the UN headquarters, reflecting a continued commitment from the United Nations to facilitate discussions aimed at fostering a collaborative environment for the leaders. The situation remains critical, as any delays or lack of agreement could hinder further progress in resolving the long-standing division of Cyprus.
