Army discovers improvised explosive devices in Abia forest
Nigerian army troops found improvised explosive devices in a forest in Abia State during operations against the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing.
Nigerian Army troops from the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, Abia State, uncovered improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a local forest during their operation aimed at disrupting the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network. This discovery occurred on February 8, 2026, near the Umuchinma pipeline route, showcasing the ongoing military efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
The Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade, Captain Mazinho Atta, stated that the operation is part of a broader initiative dubbed Operation EASTERN SANITY, which is designed to enhance security and contain the insurgent activities that have become prevalent in southeastern Nigeria. During the search operation, troops successfully found two locally made IEDs crafted from gas cylinders and other materials, indicating the sophistication of the threats faced by security forces in the area.
This incident highlights the increasing challenges Nigerian armed forces encounter while trying to handle militant groups operating in the region. The discovery of these IEDs not only demonstrates the real threats posed by IPOB and their affiliates but also underscores the importance of ongoing military operations in restoring order and safety in Abia State and surrounding areas. In light of the situation, local authorities and security forces may need to evaluate their tactics and invest more resources to counter such aggressive insurgencies effectively.
