Pedro Sanchez: Spain must adapt to the 'new climate reality'

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasizes the need for a coordinated response to climate change, which has severely impacted Spain with increasing heatwaves and floods.

Spain is one of the most affected countries in Europe by climate change, experiencing extended heatwaves and more frequent severe storms. This was underscored by the catastrophic floods in October 2024 that resulted in over 230 deaths. In light of these events, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for unity in implementing responsive measures as adverse weather phenomena become more pronounced.

During his visit to the southern Andalusian region of Etor Tacharane, which was hard-hit by floods the previous week, Sanchez reiterated his call for a broad climate agreement aimed at coordinating responsive actions on institutional, economic, and social levels. He highlighted that the conditions in Spain have undeniably changed, requiring a comprehensive strategy to address these challenges effectively.

Sanchez pointed out that adapting to this emerging climate reality demands not only resources but also collaborative efforts across all levels of government. Since January, Spain has faced seven storms which illustrate the pressing need for intervention and adaptation to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
