Mold in Dormitories: Student Union Apologizes – and Must Justify Itself Before the Minister

The German Student Union faces political scrutiny after students documented severe mold issues in dormitories, demanding immediate improvements or rent reductions.

Students living in the student city of Munich have raised serious concerns about the living conditions in their dorms, particularly highlighting mold problems that have been extensively photographed. Following a report in the SZ that revealed over 2,000 images of the disrepair in dorms 1 to 7, there has been significant political backlash, prompting the Student Union to express regret. The situation has escalated to such an extent that student representatives are now calling for rent reductions if the union does not promptly address the multitude of issues documented.

On Wednesday, a group of residents including Philipp Hörterer and Simon Schaub delivered a comprehensive documentation of these grievances to the Student Union, which operates the dorms. They presented around 2,400 photographs along with a list of approximately 900 damages, showcasing the urgent need for action. This act not only highlights the frustrations of the students but also places pressure on the Student Union to fulfill their responsibilities.

As the situation develops, the Student Union must now prepare to justify its inaction before the Minister, who is likely to take a keen interest in ensuring that student accommodation meets acceptable living standards. The potential for legal and political ramifications could prompt quicker responses to rectify the conditions, which have left many students living in uncomfortable and potentially unhealthy environments.
