Discussion on the restoration of peat extraction swamps
Elmārs Švēde is evaluating options for restoring his former peat extraction land in Latvia, seeking state support for the project.
Elmārs Švēde, having obtained a former peat extraction area of 405 hectares over 25 years ago, has taken steps towards its restoration. He has already planted some of the land with birches, while other parts have naturally regenerated, leaving some areas still unused. To better understand the next steps for this land, Švēde has applied to a national project that assesses potential costs for restoration. Among the 48 hectares he is focused on, he notes that the government has yet to approve the restoration program, although preliminary calculations suggest that funding could be available. The program aims to restore about 5,000 hectares for an estimated budget of 14 million euros, requiring landowners to contribute 15% of the expenses.
