Parliament: Ongoing auction program for the concession of simple use of beaches and coasts

The Greek government has initiated an electronic auction program for the leasing of beach areas, ensuring adherence to environmental laws.

The Greek government has launched an electronic bidding program for the concession of simple use of coastlines and beaches, as announced by the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, George Kotsiras, during a parliamentary discussion. This initiative comes in response to concerns raised by PASOK MP Naya Grigorakou regarding the enforcement of legal environmental and social conditions before granting access to beach areas, particularly in Agia Thekla and Ampekakias in the municipality of Monemvasia.

Kotsiras emphasized that the current legal framework imposes strict regulations to protect public beaches, referencing law 5092/2024 which governs the conditions for exploiting public property in coastal areas. He assured that starting this year, all auctions would be managed exclusively by property services, with a projected total of approximately 3,250 auctions expected to be completed by the deadline of March 31, 2026.

This program is significant for local economies that rely on tourism and beach access, which highlights the government's commitment to sustainable management of natural resources while balancing the need for economic development in popular coastal regions. Ensuring compliance with environmental standards will be crucial in maintaining the ecological integrity of these areas even as they are made more accessible for commercial use.
